Bio

David Mathews was born in Darlington, but when he was a toddler his family moved to the Rotherham area because of his father’s work in the steel industry. As a youngster he was educated at Lilly Hall Junior School in Maltby and Maltby Comprehensive School where he gained A levels in Mathematics, Economics and General Studies. Despite passing the Civil Service Exam his first job was assistant Golf Professional at Wath Golf Club. After two years he moved on to a career in newspaper advertising eventually going on to set up a totally new paper; The Dearne Valley Weekender.

Seeking further pastures new he went to Bretton Hall College in Wakefield, leaving with an Honours Degree in Dramatic Arts. Using this knowledge he set up the vxii theatre company which specialises in devising and performing issue based theatre in schools.

He joined Doncaster Samaritans ten years ago and regularly does shifts answering telephone calls and responding to texts and emails from people needing emotional support. These calls come in from all over the country at all hours.

He now lives on the Knoydart Peninsula on the West Coast of Scotland, but still does regular shifts at the Doncaster Samaritans Branch.
